Penns Creek Massacre

Nestled in a quiet valley of Winfield, you will find Little Mexico Campground.  Its tranquil setting is disturbed only by the gurgling of Penns Creek, which snakes through the property.

At least this is how it appears to visitors. Those who live nearby whisper about the history of the land and those who camp here talk of bizarre experiences and mysterious disappearances.

History records report that Charles LeRoy was a cousin of John Jacob LeRoy and was one of the original 26 families that had settled in Snyder County. He was a well respected doctor in the county and at the time of the Terror on Penn's Creek in October of 1755, Charles had traveled to nearby Lewisburg for supplies. Family writings indicate that he returned to find his cousin dead and that his wife and children had been among those taken hostage by the Indians.

After the loss of his family and friends, Charles stopped practicing medicine and retreated to a simpler life as the caretaker of the Old Winfield Cemetery. This cemetery dates back to the 1740's and is the resting place of many of the earliest settlers of Snyder County. He resided in the large house located on the same property and in time began reaching out to help others affected by the times by providing a place to stay.

As time passed; however, some of his guests seemed to just disappear. Rumors began to circulate but due to the chaos of the times, locals didn't think much of it.  It wasn't until one of his intended victims managed to escape that it was discovered that he had tortured and killed at least 42 men, women, & children and buried them in and around the cemetery.

In 1762 he was convicted of these brutal murders and was sentenced to receive 39 lashes and nailed to the post in the square of New Berlin and then hanged for all to see. He was then buried along side of his victims where it was believed they would be able to torture his soul for eternity.

On March 15, 1874 the Susquehanna and all the surrounding waterways rose into a flood, exceeding all degrees ever known before. This flood washed away Charles' old house and all evidence that the cemetery ever existed.

Over the course of time the property was bought and new houses built, but not a single family lasted more than a year.  Local folklore reveals that it was believed  the flood had unearthed Charles' soul which haunts each house that is built in place of his so he can continue his reign of terror. The property remained uninhabited until the early 1900's when the Mull family moved in. Mr. Mull was born and raised in the area and had heard the stories but could not afford any other property in the area to raise his young family.

With only a few strange disturbances over the course of time Mr. Mull decided to open Little Mexico Campground in the mid-1960's and he built a new house on the same spot Charles' house once stood.  Less than a year later, his daughter was found drowned in the well beneath the house. Although he kept the campground open, he vacated the house. He was the last to walk the floors of that house... or is he?

If Charles is still there, will you be his next victim or will he let you live?
